Project Description
The Sustainable Project Management through PM² (SPM²) project is designed to embed sustainability into project management education across Europe. By adapting the European Commission’s PM² methodology, this project provides a tailored framework that integrates sustainable practices within project management processes, equipping future professionals to address environmental challenges with practical and innovative solutions.
SPM² seeks to bridge the gap between project management education and the evolving needs of a green economy by developing a standardized curriculum, digital resources, and a modular micro-credential system. This framework will empower higher education institutions (HEIs) and vocational education and training (VET) centers to deliver training that aligns with the EU’s Green Deal, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and labour market expectations for sustainability-focused skills.
By fostering collaboration with industry leaders, certification bodies, and academic institutions, SPM² ensures that project management education not only responds to sustainability goals but also prepares a resilient and skilled workforce capable of leading green transitions across Europe.
Objectives
-
Create the SPM² Guide & Digital Resource Hub
Develop a practical guide and an interactive online platform with tools, articles, and webinars to empower professionals in applying sustainable project management through PM². -
Standardize SPM² Profiles & Curriculum
Define core competencies and align educational programs to equip future project managers with the skills needed for sustainable, impact-driven project delivery. -
Launch Micro-Credentials & Training Programs
Design flexible, standards-aligned micro-credentials with digital badges, promoting lifelong learning and professional growth in SPM². -
Secure Certification & Recognition of SPM²
Partner with HEIs and certification bodies to establish SPM² as a recognized, ISO 17024-compliant standard for sustainable project management education.
Expected Impact
The project will strengthen digital and green capabilities in education, providing pathways for upskilling that support the EU’s Green Deal and UN SDGs, enhancing career mobility through accredited credentials.
Key impact points include:
Enhanced Digital and Green Skills
Through the SPM² Guide and Digital Resource Hub, students and professionals will have access to an innovative platform that offers practical tools, templates, and case studies. This hub will develop competencies in sustainable project management, increasing learners’ adaptability to evolving green and digital skill demands.
Alignment with EU Green Deal and SDGs
SPM² will train project managers and graduates to incorporate eco-conscious practices in their work, directly contributing to EU climate targets, such as carbon neutrality and sustainable development. Graduates equipped with SPM² credentials will play a critical role in sectors prioritizing green transformation.
Career Mobility and Recognition
The micro-credential framework will allow learners to earn stackable, accredited certifications recognized across Europe. This modular approach to certification enables both students and professionals to gain targeted, industry-validated skills that are essential in the sustainability and project management fields, enhancing their employability and mobility across sectors.
Support for Lifelong Learning and Professional Growth
By establishing a flexible credentialing system, SPM² supports ongoing education and skill acquisition. Professionals can continually update their expertise, adapting to new industry standards and sustainability practices, thereby fostering a resilient, future-ready workforce.
Widespread Adoption of Sustainable Project Practices
The dissemination efforts by the project team will promote the SPM² framework across Europe, encouraging institutions, businesses, and public sector bodies to integrate sustainability into their project management practices. This broad impact aligns with European Union objectives to create a greener, more sustainable economy.
