On December 5–6, 2024, the SPM² project team took part in the 4th International Student Conference DISC2024, hosted by the Faculty of Technical Sciences at the University of Novi Sad. The hybrid event attracted over 60 participants from Serbia and across Europe, including Poland, Hungary, Portugal, and even Tanzania.

The spotlight was on the scientific paper titled “Tailoring the PMBOK® Guide for Sustainable Project Management,” authored by Milena Savković, Danijela Ćirić Lalić, and Haris Konstantopoulos, all members of the SPM² consortium. The paper, inspired by the SPM² initiative, explored how the widely used PMBOK® Guide could be adapted to better incorporate sustainability principles, with a focus on lifecycle thinking, stakeholder engagement, and agile methodologies.

Key Highlights:

  • The presentation underscored the importance of embedding sustainability into project management methodologies.

  • Real-world insights from the SPM² project were shared, demonstrating practical applications of sustainable project practices.

  • The presentation sparked a lively discussion among students, researchers, and industry professionals, reinforcing the relevance of the SPM² approach.

DISC2024 provided an ideal academic platform to elevate the conversation on sustainability in project management, affirming SPM²’s growing influence within both educational and professional spheres.

Although SPM² was not the formal focus of the event, its principles resonated strongly throughout the discussions, and its contribution was clearly recognized as a timely and impactful step forward in adapting project management to address today’s global challenges.

The paper will be published in the DISC2024 conference proceedings, expanding its reach to a broader academic audience.
